Ben Gurion University

Jerusalem Post readers comment on Yocheved Miriam Russo’s article on Neve Gordon and Ben Gurion University's response (updated as of 29/9/2009 11:55pm)

40. Gordon and his anti Israeli Position

I have been to Ben Gurion University and met some of the faculty and students and have earmarked a large contribution. The fact that Ben Gurion University gave Gordon tenure and promoted him to Department Head is very disturbing. Long ago it was said freedom of speech does not go so far as to allow a man to go into a crowded theatre and yell fire. This article is making me reconsider altering my contribution.

Max Zaslawsky - USA (09/29/2009 11:09)

25. Neve Gordon

Is not the first or the last academic in Israel to issue such statements of self-hatred, getting in bed with neo-nazis if necessary to quote A. Dershowitz. He should start his boycott by resigning from his position and leaving the country that raised him at once. This kind of individual is counterproductive and a burden for our society. I hope that BGU's Senate will take the appropriate stance with this mentally impaired faculty of them. D. Rittel Professor, Technion, Haifa

39. 20% of Israeli population are over 1,000,000 non-Jewish voting Arabs.

The non-Jews who are citizen's, can even hold public office in the Knesset. Have you looked up the meaning of "apartheid"? Read something before showing your ignorance.

Never Will Be a Dhimmi - USA (09/27/2009 04:43)

38. it also seems to me, the least you should expect from your teachers is that you love your country and fellow countrymen

this is nothing but sedition. i've wondered a long time about how american universities, most of which were started by christians for higher learning became a place where socialists, communists and now a place where the despots of the world feel free to send their kids. the world hates america as much as the university professors so it's a natural fit. this is the enemy within that will destroy. give your money to institutions that actually love, uphold and encourage your country, not tear it down for the world to see. as bibi said "moral clarity". freedom of speech is a smokescreen.

maryjane - california (09/27/2009 01:24)

37. if you owned a business and found that a new salesman was causing trouble in your office and openly telling your customers

not to buy your products, how long would you keep them? at what point did the institutions of higher learning become a place where misfits are allowed to spew their venom and poison and indoctrinate young minds and then be entitled to a lifetime job and immunity from oversight. just because one has a thought pass thru their puny brains doesn't mean the country has to pay them to express it to indoctrinate their children. freedom of thought and speech? sure. we just don't have to pay you to vomit it out. the leadership of bgu should be fired. they knowingly hired this man and others like him.

36. The making of Naturei Karta / Ahmadinejad philosophy, or as in the past,

the downfall of our modern schtetl Let's look at the facts, today. The donors are as stupid as the faculty ; The faculty is as stupid as Gordon, who in turn will educate the next stupid generation of Israelis. Our enemies are smart. All they have to do is sit and watch us. Obama is doing the work for them; BGU is doing the work for Him, and gordon is finishing it with all the dots on the I's.

ZORRO - (09/26/2009 23:05)

35. My loetter to the LAT never saw the light of day.

There is a reason why Gordon chose the LAT to publish his own private chapter of the PROTOCOLS.This paper dedictaed itslef to publish every anti Israel diatribe written by known haters of Israel.I wrote a letter immediatly to the paper complaining and demanding an apology. The letter never saw the light of day .Only letters agreeing with the Jewish capo were published. BGU does not deserve to be called an Israeli university. It is poison, danger to Israel's stand in the world. No one should give this school money unless they are enemies of Israel.

flower - USA (09/26/2009 23:03)

34. The real Disgrace is that Gordon was hired and Promoted by BGU for his hate propaganda

Gordon has virtually no bona fide scholarly publications. His resume consists of hate propaganda misrepresented as research. And because BGU refuses to adopt serious academic standards, it indeed deserves to be boycotted by REAL Jews! The REAL disgrace is that Ben Gurion University has abandoned standards of excellence and promoted shallow hate propagandists!!

32. Cake and Eat it, Prof. Carmi?

'BGU officials rue the fact that they're under pressure from two sides. "We have heard the calls by those who demand that the university ignore Israeli law and fire Gordon, a tenured faculty member," Carmi said.' BGU President Carmi, a presumably intelligent person, must have been under no illusions regarding Gordon when approving his promotion and tenure. Now she disengenuously invokes Israeli law when his appointment is criticised. It is high time the Education Ministry asserted itself and that the good hearted donors carefully consider what they choose to do with their hard-earned cash

Makevet - Israel (09/26/2009 19:36)

31. Boycott BGU until half the professors in the PS dept are Zionists

If indeed "no traditional Zionist academic has a chance to be hired at BGU's political science dept" then it is more than one professor's opinions. It is a policy eminating from the university. Therefore, boycott BGU until that situation is reveresed and at least half of their professors are known traditional Zionists. What good is a university that nurtures the next generation of Israelis to become Israel-haters? Use the money to support CAMERA, StandWithUs, Ariel University, Schechter schools (or other Jewish schools in the US), Bnei Brith, and endless other Jewish and Zionist causes.

30. Do not donate until they close the Department or at least hire sufficiently many zionist profs to make them majority

29. Gordon

This man makes me feel physically sick. And the thought that he is teaching impressionable students is very scary. This is where the boycott needs to be directed, against him and his ilk. Donors need to check where their money is going.

Gillian - Israel (09/26/2009 17:33)

28. # 2 Michael. USA

Michael you are 100% correct. If more Jews would write to the media, it would put our case to the world. I am a memebr of the Jewish Media team in Cape Town. Problem. The Editorial staff at the Cape Times and Argus are Muslim. They print the most disgusting Jew/ Israel hate letters. I have written many letters to these papers, but they sledom print any of my letters in reply to those Muslims. We are fighting a religious media war here. I Imagine it is the same elsewhere. But I keep writing, knowing that once in a while they will print one of my letters. KEEP WRITING.

27. Ben-Gurion University had shot itself in the foot by promoting Gordon

The university administration was well aware of Dr. Gordon's views and potentially embarrassing antics well before he was granted tenure. Tenure, as is well known by any academic, will only reinforce the views, political platform, and research methodology, of any faculty member. Thus, the fact that he has become even more obscene in his Israel bashing should not have escaped the senior administration of BGU. If potential donors boycott the university because of his antics, they have only themselves to blame for enabling the promotion of such a self-loathing Jew and vehement basher of Israel.

Dan - U.S.A. (09/26/2009 17:16)

26. The battle of the boycotts

This guy Neev is an idiot. For someone who lives in Israel to say this, while facing missles fly over your head, indicates how out of touch with reality he is. Just another pathetic attempt by a no-name to make headlines.

23. Force (in this case money) is all that lesser man understands

This professor would seem to be getting away with murder. If it is actually illegal to fire him the very least the university could do (if they actually wanted to) would be to issue a realistic denunciation of what he is doing. However they have just tried to pretend it is not happening. So they are also culpable. The sooner Jewish people stop funding and otherwise facilitating their own destruction the better - if they actually want to avoid being eliminated.

John B - Europe (09/26/2009 16:37)

22. As long as Gordon and president Carni is at BGU boycott the university.

As long as Gordon and President od university Carni is at BGU boycott the university. I and my friends stoped all donation to the university. I hope all the donors in US will stop donated to the BGU. WE need to teach them a lesson.

21. #13 Cliff S.Africa

Well and good that you are such a moral person and keep yourself well ABOVE the fray. But you are also short of wisdom and hard experience. To make your point you are willing to SINK THE SHIP. Grow up! Please. P.S. this so-called professor isnt much different than YOU.

sel - usa (09/26/2009 16:23)

20. With his history, why was he appointed head of the dept in the first place?

Given his publication in media outlets during the past several years, it is naive beyond belief to think that BGU didn't know about his extremism and anti-Zionism prior to appointing him head of the dept. They are now reaping their own fruits. If the university is hurt by his actions, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Noa - (09/26/2009 15:44)

19. Gordon and the boycott

I totally agree with all those who are enraged by Gordon's article. However, if the donors boycott BGU, they will play into the hands of "post-Zionists" like Gordon who calls on boycotting Israel. I think the solution lies in donations' ear-marking. This way, the projects that strengthen Israel will be supported and the Departments like Gordon's will be not. Gordon calls for boycott--let him have it! Perhaps, he will relocate to his beloved Ramalla (Arafatville), or better yet to Gaza, where he will enjoy academic and other freedoms.

Gabriel - USA (09/26/2009 15:30)

18. Neve Gordon and treason

Neve Gordon's call for a boycot is NOT freedom of speach but incitement and should be treated as treason. If he is unable to pledge allegience to the State of Isreal, he should be asked to leave his post at an Israeli University.

Gil - Israel (09/26/2009 15:20)

17. Don't kid yourselves, donors

Gordon was promoted and given tenure BECAUSE of his anti-Israel views. This is a common occurance in most Israeli universities since in the humanties, tenure is granted on the basis of personal contacts rather than ability. The Humanities Dept. at BGU is particularly well known for maintaining and promoting 'scholars' who rarely publish or do any meaningful research. A 'scholar's' anti-Israel views is a tried and true way to gain tenure, turning the 'scholar' into an untouchable. Do the Jewish people a favor and give your money to people who are trying to build the Jewish State instead

Academic - Israel (09/26/2009 15:16)

16. The students should have boycotted his class!

The rest of the faculty should have demanded that he be fired. But this is what we have studying and teaching. A new generation of leftists. I hope that BGU will be cut off from all funds both from overseas and from Israel. We should demand that all these leftists and post Zionists are fired and replaced with people who care about Israel more than they care about our enemies.

15. neve gordon affair

dear post: clearly prof gordon is suffering from a delusionary affliction & is in need of medical help...who appointed him, given his undistinguished political insights, head of BGU's dept of politics & government...is there/will there be an investigation?...AK

axel kinder - canada (09/26/2009 14:49)

14. BGU with traitorous professors

I suggest that all donors advise BGU that their donations have stopped. Let BGU suffer tiill they fire each and every academic who acts in the manner that this traitor has. Only true, loyal lecturers need apply.

Mark Brajtman - South Africa (09/26/2009 14:39)

13. Well done to Professor Gordon

As usual, the JPost article & early comments are predictably "shooting the messenger". Go read his article 1st! Then CONSIDER what he's saying before having your rant. When will Israelis finally work out that taking whatever West Bank land they want tramples on other people's rights? You can't keep doing that and think the problem will go away. Prof Gordon is making the very fair case that since Israelis won't do anything, others should.Of course the normal shouts of the terror attacks on Israel will now be wheeled out. Terrorists should be shot but most Palestinians also deserve fair rights.

Cliff - S Africa (09/26/2009 14:02)

12. Don't boycott BGU

Close this "flat Earth theory" Department

Victor Ivrii - Canada (09/26/2009 14:02)

11. Gordon is not alone

185 israeli professors supported Gordon. The freedom of speech is NOT the freedom to destroy Israel from inside. Donnors should definitely stop funding this university until they find a way to fire this guy. What's the point to help an institution destroying Israel from inside?

JB - (09/26/2009 13:59)

10. Stop paying his salary

If you can't stand the Israeli policy so go away, no one really needs you! fortunately, he's minority

9. Cant Believe

This person was promoted to head BGU's Politics and Government Department even after knowing what he was. People like him will cause downfall of our jewish state.

Norman - (09/26/2009 13:33)

8. The solution: Replace neve Gordon with..

Eveline Gordon! Our whole academia is infested with anti-Israel subversive elements (some financed by foreign hostile sources). Neve G. is prejudicial to the state, abuses academic freedom, publically insults every loyal citizen of Israel and fuels Arab propaganda in time of conflict. There must be some article in our penal code that could put that guy in jail..and if not the system should be revised. By the way was that Arab juge Reem Naddaf reprimended by Mazuz for having abuse her position and added to Gordon's anti-israel statements?

Michael Dar - Israel (09/26/2009 13:24)

7. self inflicted

BGU showed no foresight when they promoted this vile man. They got themselves into this problem and now they will have to deal with reduced donations. They should have thought of this before. Sorry BGU no free lunch.

ron - (09/26/2009 13:05)

6. Freedom of speech

In Israel, just as in Sweden, freedom of speech does not imply that anyone can spout whatever rot and avoid consequences. Freedom of speech means ONLY that government cannot PREVENT expression beforehand, of prosecute speech afterward. It is not reasonable that, tenure or no, academic life must go on undisturbed for a man who has exploited his authoritative position to make outrageous and mendacious proclamations before the greatest possible audience. In Gordon's case, perhaps a sanity interview with a team of psychatrists is in order.

nehama purta - Israel (09/26/2009 13:03)

5. Greenger is right. Boycott BGU is reasonable.

Academic freedom is not purely academic, words have power and instil actions. These donors have as much right not to give as to give , and since BGU has encouraged such a boycott of Israel they should be the first to champion the donors buycott of their university. The should praise it, it would be far less hypcritcal. Buycotts are not academic exercises, they are real and tangible and effect people. BGU should be honoured that their words are taken for real and are not hypcritical

JO - (09/26/2009 12:25)

4. Department of Sedition and Defamation

Since Gordon cannot be fired, the solution is for those students who wish to study his subject (political science), to do so at other Israeli universities. It is probable that those benefactors who currently donate generously to BGU would subsidise such students. When enrolments in Gordon's department drop below the critical threshold, BGU will shut down this Department of Sedition and Defamation.

Yehuda - (09/26/2009 12:22)

3. Ben Gurion University is a scandal, they don't deserve a shekel.

I've been following this story at the Zionist Conspiracy blog for a while now. It is truely shocking & something must be done about it. Cutting off funds is only a first step. All the looney-left anti-Israel garbage should be fired, dismissed from their posts. Enough is enough. This is an abuse of academic freedom & I object for even one shekel of MY taxes go to support this institution until it is cleaned up.

Terry - Israel (09/26/2009 11:50)

2. Shame on Professor Gordon and other

See, history will repeat itself, slowly but surely, the forces of hate and intolerance are gaining strength. Even with Eretz Israel. A spirit of hate and vision is building. To have Jews spouting such things of their land is unfathomable. We continue to love Israel, her people and most important our G-d, who will protect Israel, not matter what some wacky intelligentsia is up to. All Zionists must continue the fight whether in Eretz Israel, the USA, Europe or wherever. Our battlefield is the media and we need to stand firm.

Michael - USA (09/26/2009 11:40)

1. Out!

I'm not a proponet of censorship by any stretch, but this goes beyond the pale. Gordon should be fired, and I believe a case for treason could be made. Israel is technically at war, and asking the world to cut us off would, to say the least, be damaging to our war effort. What a loser. He should go live with the "Palestinians"

David - Israel (09/26/2009 11:08)
