We’ve written here before about Israeli academic mathematicians who seek Israel’s obliteration or support Israel’s enemies. Duke University’s Rann Barr-On, however, goes beyond this; he is an active member and organizer for the International Solidarity Movement and was responsible for arranging for his campus group’s hosting a national recruiting and organizing campaign in the United States back in 2006. He is also a true believer in the peaceful effects of murdering Jews. According to the Anti-Defamation League: ‘During the PSM conference, Barr-On compared the treatment of ‘Palestine’ by Israel to “Algiers under the French or Poland under the Nazis,” concluding that “there is always violence under occupation.” Barr-On also focused on the difficulties faced by anti-Israel activists in the U.S., where “any criticism of Israel is taken as anti-Semitism.”’

I remember being seated only four seats away from Barr-On at one of his events. He nervously chewed on his fingernails at a lecture given by Mohammed Abed of the “Alternative Palestine Agenda” from the University of Wisconsin. That was one of the earliest ISM organizing attempts on American college campuses. Abed explained the need for Israel to stop being a Jewish state: an Arab himself, he said that if Israel would only stop identifying itself as a Jewish state then all would be well. He saw no need for Arab states to stop being Arab states or Muslim states. At one point Rann Barr-On explained why he agrees, “That’s like my mom,” he said. “She told me she feels more like an Israeli than she does a Jew and prefers to be recognized as just an Israeli.”

Barr-On’s contribution to the jihad was to set up the group HIWAR on the Durham North Carolina campus. “HIWAR” means dialogue in Arabic, but in the case of Duke’s HIWAR, it is a dialogue of the deaf. The real purpose of the HIWAR’s campus events is to promote the Arab boycott against Israel, Duke’s pusillanimous official administration position was that such boycotts of Jews are not against the law in the US (they are!!), and HIWAR events are whitewashed for the press as if they involve dialogue. I myself was barred from attending a Palsolidarity event at Duke. I had to disguise myself as a Muslim to get in to attend a seminar. There ISM leader, Abe Greenhouse (who once hit Minister Natan Sharansky in the face with a pie at Rutgers University), lectured about how to infiltrate Jewish organizations to make American Jews think that Israel is a rogue state that must abandon its Jewishness. Greenhouse once went to the site of a bus bombing in Israel and shouted “End the Occupation!” He also placed a note in the Western Wall laced with obscenities against Israel. This is the crowd Rann Barr-On runs with.

Another Duke HIWAR seminar featured ISM leader and co-founder Huwaida Arraf, who openly admitted that ISM works with Hamas, the PFLP and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, all designated terrorist groups according to the US State Department. Barr-On, interviewed in the local news as a HIWAR representative, saw nothing wrong with this. In fact, he lectured at the conference on how ISM activists could trick the Jewish Birthright program into sending ISM activists to the West Bank in order to riot on behalf of the Palestinians, by passing themselves off as Jews hoping to learn more about Israel (Birthright has since tried to close up this loophole). Barr-On participated in the scam himself, earning himself a rubber bullet in the back while rioting in B’ilin with the ISM. It did not stop his recruiting to aid terrorist groups as human shields.

Hi all,

ISM has decided to scale back our presence in the South Hebron Hills village
of Qawawis to weekends only starting next week, as we do not have enough
internationals in Palestine at the moment. However, people are needed there
all the time, especially now that the only house in the village has been
threatened with demolition. Therefore we are requesting that any Israelis who
can spend one or two nights (or more) down there do. It's a lovely little
village, with very little to do most of the time. It's great for a bit of a
break. The people are lovely, you get fed three times a day and the area is
beautiful.

Some background: the villagers of Qawawis were forced to move out to Carmel
following settler attacks. A few months ago, under ISM protection, some of
them moved back to Qawawis. Since then, settler attacks have increased, but
recently had disappeared _while activists are around_. When there are no
activists (with cameras) there, the settlers do what they want.

Not to be left out. Rann Barr-On signed a petition in support of both Hezbollah and Hamas, which declared,

“We, Jews of Conscience, demand that the U.S. government:

* Require Israel to stop its brutal siege on Gaza and on Lebanon and call for an unconditional cease fire.
* Require Israel to stop the expansion of the Israeli Wall of Separation, dismantle the completed sections, and completely withdraw from Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
* Support the United Nations resolutions demanding that Israel uphold international law and support the sanctions against Israel necessary to enforce these resolutions.
* End military and economic aid to Israel.
* Support reparations for the Palestinian and Lebanese people for the death and destruction they have suffered and for aid towards the rebuilding of their countries.”

It should be noted the recent flotilla stories that have been in the news are a culmination of activities that were begun four years ago in 2006 by the likes of Rann Barr-On at Duke University and from where he still promotes the end of Israel.
