Hebrew University - Nurit Peled-Elhanan (Dept. of Education) celebrates the Murderers of her Own Daughter

We’ve written before at Isracampus about Nurit Peled El-Hanan (which is how she has been spelling it lately). Mazen Qumsiyeh, a former PFLP member and founder of the international anti-Israel group Al Awda, features her on his website (which advocates Israel’s annihilation from “the river to the sea” and promotes worldwide boycott of Israel). El-Hanan is a lecturer in Language Education at Hebrew University specializing in “discourse in Israeli education with emphasis on visual and verbal presentation of Palestinian and non-western Jews.” She also writes and speaks on the education of children.

In September 1997, Nurit’s daughter Smadar was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber. Ever since, El-Hanan has blamed Israel for the death, not the Palestinian terrorists who actually killed her. In her speech at Connecticut College in 2006 carried by Qumsiyeh’s website, she is quoted as saying:

“I would like to dedicate these words to all the Palestinian boys and girls, and to all the Lebanese boys and girls, and to all the Iraqi boys and girls who have been massacred by mind-infected Israeli and American soldier boys, and who have recently joined my own little girl in the underground kingdom of dead children, which is growing under our feet as I speak. I would like to tell them not to worry: ‘You will be well received there, children, and no one will hurt you just because you wandered off on your way to school or because you wore a scarf on your head or because you lived in a certain place. Rest in peace, everyone is equally worthy in your new world. This is the world where Israeli children dwell side by side with Palestinian children. There they lay, victims and murderers (sic), whose bloods have long been absorbed by the holy land which has always been indifferent to blood.”

She continues, “Nevertheless people who belong to the Judeo-Christian cultures, who support American-British and Israeli crimes against humanity, and particularly against Muslims all over the world, people who send their children to fight these ruthless useless wars in the name of democracy and freedom which are cover names for greed and megalomania, dare call themselves enlightened and blame it all on some imaginary clash of civilizations. What does this fear-stricken world offer as a solution to Palestinian , Iraqi or Afgan (sic) people who are harassed, abused, tortured and famished by western (sic) crimes and exploitation? The general offer this enlightened world gives them is: Be like us. Constitute a Democracy like ours, embrace our values which despise you, which consider you an inferior primitive lot to be cultivated or cleansed away. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the attitude that permit American soldiers to rape, torture and kill Muslim men women and children by the thousands, that permits Israeli soldiers to order Palestinian women to strip in front of their children for security reasons, jailers to keep them in inhuman conditions, without necessary hygienic aids, without clean water or clean mattresses and separate them from their breast-fed babies and toddlers. To block their way to education, to confiscate their lands, to destroy their water wells, to uproot their trees and to prevent them from working their fields. This is what permits Israeli pilots to drop a hundred bombs of one ton a day on the most crowded area in the world –Gaza. This is what permits Israel to issue racist laws that separate mothers from fathers and children.”

El-Hanan is sister to communist professor Yoav Peled, from Tel Aviv University, and stems from a family with other Marxist and far-left ties. She gave another speech before an International Solidarity Movement  group the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, a communist anti-Israel organization. There she said: “My little girl was murdered because she was an Israeli by a young man who was humiliated, oppressed and desperate to the point of suicide and murder and inhumanity, just because he was a Palestinian.” She expressed more sympathy for her daughter’s killer than for the other Israeli mothers who also lost daughters that day. Had she lost family in the Holocaust during World War II, she would have blamed their deaths on European Jews.

There was another mother that day who lost a daughter to the same Arab suicide bomber, an American woman. Instead of blaming Israel and America, she sued the government of Iran in US courts for its involvement in funding Hamas terrorism, and she was awarded by the court over 240 million dollars. No doubt El-Hanan would consider that part of western greed. This other woman did something positive, but El-Hanan has become an apologist for the very Islamofascist terrorism that murdered her own daughter.

The Arab who killed her daughter, Smadar El-Hanan, and other people’s children that day in Jerusalem was Tawfiq Yassine. The terrorist did so because he was recruited by Hamas, not because he was “desperate to the point of suicide.” All four terrorists involved in the attack were recruited and trained by Hamas, whose charter calls for the annihilation of world Jewry in plain and simple language. Ironically, even Yassine’s family thought what he did was sacrilegious and made no excuses for him like El-hanan did.

El-Hanan is also involved with another anti-Israel, proto-Marxist organization in Israel co-founded with her husband, calling itself the “Parent’s Circle.” It contains other parents who have lost children and wish to reach emotional closure by supporting the demands of the terrorists who murdered them. Their agenda is to blame the Jewish state for those deaths. “Parents Circle” is funded by European and American Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), groups not particularly interested in seeing Israel survive as a Jewish state.

Once on television in the US I personally exposed a “Parent’s Circle” tour of synagogues and churches, which featured two women, one Arab, one Jewish. Both claimed they had suffered bereavement. Their tour was a fraud designed to alienate American, and particularly American Jewish audiences, from defending Israel because the Jewish state practices self-defense. The speakers told Jews and Christians, as well as listeners in Congress, and on TV how the Arab speaker’s sister had been knifed to death in East Jerusalem by a “Jewish settler,” claiming that this was the result of “the occupation.” The Jewish woman in the duo (Robi Damelin, another radical anti-Israel activist) backed the Arab woman and she herself had lost her son, an IDF officer, to an Arab sniper at a checkpoint, killed with seven other Israelis. The killer of her son expressed no remorse, had called her a liar when she spoke with him, yet she only made excuses for him. Like El-Hanan, Damelin encourages Israeli soldier mutiny and insurrection through the “Refuser’s Network.”

Well, as it turns out, the two “mothers” were a couple of pathetic liars. I revealed during the TV show the Arab woman’s sister had been, in fact, murdered by a fellow Palestinian Arab, who mistakenly thought he was murdering a Jew. The fellow had even confessed. Damelin then told me that because she had made the “supreme sacrifice” as an Israeli mother, she has the right to support Palestinian violence. She insisted that she bears no ill will towards the “Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade” terrorist who murdered her son. Of course it was her son, not her, who made the supreme sacrifice. We kind of doubt he would find the terrorist who murdered him such a figure for admiration.

The point of the story is that people like El-Hanan and Damelin are so desperate to promote their anti-Israel political agendas that they are even willing to celebrate the murderers of their own kin. While Damelin is just a pathetic crank, El-Hanan holds an academic position, where she can influence students in her classes at the Hebrew University.

Here is a quote from El-Hanan, made at a recent ISM protest at Hebrew University against Israel’s defensive war against Hamas terrorism from Gaza:

“Had Israeli preschoolers been asked ‘What did you learn at school this year, dear little boy of mine?’ there are all kinds of answers which we might have gotten. An enlightened and critical child might have answered: I learned that the sun is still shining, and the almond tree is blooming, and the butcher butchers, and there is nobody to judge him. And the child who is less used to theorizing might rejoice and say: I learned how to cheat Americans, deceive Palestinians, to kill Arabs, to expel families from their homes, and to curse whoever tells me that I am a nasty brat when I have been a nasty brat. And I learned that the Jewish People lives and that Gilad Shalit also lives. Still. The Religious-Zionist child, who attends the fenced and well-guarded kindergarten in the settlement, might say: I learned to be a good Zionist, to love the Land, to die and kill for its sake, to expel from it the invaders, to kill their children, to destroy their homes, and never to forget that in each and every generation the persecutors arise to annihilate us and that all gentiles are the same and that they are all anti-Semites who must be annihilated. And the most important is that the sun is still shining, and the almond tree is still blooming, and soon we will go planting all over the mountains Samaria and Judea and guard well the saplings against the herd of sheep which invaded our country in the two thousand years that we have not been here to guard it.”

She then continued her rant:

“Our children have learned this year that all the disgusting qualities which anti-Semites attribute to Jews are actually manifested among our leaders: deceit and deception, greed and the murder of children. While accused of trading in transplanted organs, the unperturbed Government of Israel is engaged in trading in whole humans – for the time being. It can be conjectured that for many years to come, when many cars would bear the bumper sticker ‘Gilad - born to be free,’ the captains of the pirate ship known as Israel will continue their scheming and still haggle over how many kilograms of Jewish flesh, which is probably shrinking, could be traded for how much Palestinian flesh which is also not all that it used to be, as we learned from the news item about theft of skin and corneas at the Abu Kabir Forensic Center. And they will continue to kill in Gilad's name and starve and suffocate in Gilad's name and to annihilate the Palestinian people slowly but surely, and on the way encourage the flourishing of the Palestinian bad "weeds" that always legitimize the ongoing killing.

‘As in every rotten and corrupt society, the word ‘values’ recurs again and again in every speech of every politician, especially the wanted ones. The values of Zionism and the values of Judaism and the values of the IDF. The values of Zionism we have seen this year in their full glory at the expulsion of families out of their homes in Sheikh Jarrah. The values of Democracy and the Rule of Law are expressed in Palestinians who are suspected of a violent act being extra-judicially assassinated in their homes, in front of their children, while Jewish terrorists enjoy to the full the amenities of the judicial system.”

Nurit Peled-El-hanan has no interest in the murders of Israeli children like Afik Zahavi, 4, Danielle Shefi, 5, and others. Afik’s greatest joy was to sit in the car as it went through the car wash. A miracle baby born to parents who tried for many years to conceive a child, he was killed by a Qassam rocket fired at his day care center in Sderot. Danielle was killed as she excitedly dressed to go to temple on Shabbat. Her infant baby sister was also shot that day by an Arab terrorist who was then hidden by nearby Arab villagers and has never been caught. Gal Eisenman spent a day in Tel Aviv at a birthday party with her grandmother and was killed with her grandmother, a kindergarten teacher.

Peled El-Hanan really admires their killers, and thinks we all need to feel sympathy for the murderers of Jewish children, because their deaths are all Israel’s fault.
