University of Washington: Booking lies - Library Science Professor Raya Fidel Struggles against Israel’s Existence

Fidel likes to remind everyone that she is Jewish when she bellows against Israel. She would not want anyone to get the wrong idea. She loves to posture her “Jewish outrage [that] continues to mount over Israeli horrors.” She had the gall to list herself as a “Jerusalem professor” when she signed a petition along with other anti-Israel academics accusing Israel of “contemplating crimes against humanity” at the outset of the US-Iraq War, an article that rumor mongered that Israel was planning to transfer the Palestinian population from the West Bank using the war as a diversion. She was still at the University of Washington at the time, not a “Jerusalem professor.”

University of Washington: Booking lies - Library Science Professor Raya Fidel Struggles against Israel’s Existence

University of Washington’s Raya Fidel seems to despise Israel and wish it harm. Much of the energy of this expatriate from Israel is devoted to organizing “Bash-Israel” propaganda events.

An Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Washington, Raya Fidel got her B.Sc. degree in Mathematical Sciences from Tel Aviv University, Israel, in 1970, and her M.L.S. degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She worked on the Hebrew University's library system and served as the Librarian of the School of Applied Sciences and Technology for five years. Later she went to the University of Maryland, and got a Ph.D. in Library Science. Ms. Fidel, no relation to the other Fidel except in their shared hatred of Israel, joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1982.

Her position on Israel and the conflict with the Arab world is fairly stereotypical of the Israeli anti-Israel professorial crowd out to dismantle the Jewish state. She declares herself a “feminist” like those in the anti-Israel “New Profile” organization, which promotes mutiny among Israeli soldiers. She writes frequently for radical socialist (and pro-communist) websites, where she claims to be all for equality between Arabs and Jews. Being a denizen of Washington State, which produced Rachel Corrie, Professor Fidel disseminates as much Arab “propaganda” as possible.

Writing in an article for “Freedom Socialist - Voice of International Revolutionary Feminism" - July-Sept. 2002 (note the communist revolutionary internationale theme mixed with “feminism” in the title), she stated: “But since the systematic increase in the brutality of the occupation following the beginning of the new Palestinian Intifada in October 2000, growing numbers of Jews, even Zionist Jews, realize that the war against the Palestinians makes Israel a racist and immoral state.”

Fidel has also written this: “The U.S. government has complete control over the (Arab-Israeli) war, because our tax money is paying the bill. Israel could not maintain such a lengthy and atrocious occupation without the generous financial support of the USA... because it needs an outpost and pawn to use in furthering its interests in the oil-rich Middle East... Therefore, it is extremely important that we in the U.S. demand in every way possible that the government stop aiding Israel... Oppose the funding of Israeli apartheid. End U.S. funds to Israel now!”

One of the projects on which Raya Fidel actively worked in the US Northwest was for the Boeing Corporation, which is actually a major target for boycotting by the International Solidarity Movement because of that company’s involvement with military systems that help both the IDF and US military. Raya Fidel actively works with the ISM affiliate in Washington State (a.k.a. Palestine Solidarity), even chairing anti-Israel conferences.

Raya Fidel is featured from time to time for an internet magazine titled “Freedom Socialist: Voice of Revolutionary Feminism” and is active in her campus group of “radical women,” “radical” (meaning “anti-capitalist”), “anti-US” and “anti-Israel” as typical boilerplate jargon. She spoke on a panel at a “Radical Women Conference” at the University of Washington, where she claimed: “…the strength of Palestinian women who, during the time of the Intifada, created an ‘underground state’ for healthcare, food, and other basic needs.” She also spoke of “Israeli and Palestinian women coming together to watch over checkpoints and observe and record the behavior of soldiers.”

In opposition to the war against terrorism waged by the US, she signed a petition condemning the US in the War on Terror by Not In Our Name, an anti-Semitic communist organization. The petition is a compendium of American radicals and communists such as Leslie Cagan, the head of the renamed Communist Party USA and even some leftist movie stars.
