Weizmann Institute - Math and Computer Science Professor Oded Goldreich demonizing Israel and Zionism for the Ivy League

By Lee Kaplan, www.IsraCampus.org
22/3/2010

According to the Weizmann Institute website, “When the Institute was conceived in 1933, the embattled Jewish population of Palestine numbered 400,000 and Rehovot was a tiny agricultural community surrounded by orange groves. In this milieu, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, who would later become the first President of the State of Israel, envisioned the establishment of a world-class scientific research center. Though resources were extremely scarce, Dr. Weizmann, a successful chemist and tireless statesman for the Zionist cause, believed such an institute was crucial to securing the future of a Jewish state, both economically and politically.”

Today, Dr. Weizmann is probably spinning in his grave. He could never have envisioned a faculty that would include someone like Math and Computer Science Professor Oded Goldreich. Goldreich is an open supporter of Israel’s Stalinist communist party, Hadash, that has mainly anti-Israel Arabs in its membership. It produces Arab-Israeli politicians like Azmi Bishara, now on the lam for spying for Hizballah. Hadash supports all manner of belligerence against the Jewish state.

Goldreich himself abhors Zionism in all his writings and commentaries. His personal political page reads “The Israeli society has been degenerating morally and intellectually for several decades and reached a disgusting low point. This degeneration is due in part to a global degeneration (lead (sic) by the USA), but is actually dominated by a local factor. The latter is the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Thus, the single most important change that should take place is the immediate ending of this occupation.”  His site includes other recommended “actions” such as “adopting a critical view of Globalization, Privatization and Capitalism, and acting accordingly.” He then continues, “Concrete suggestion: support HADASH, the only political party in the parliament that is committed to all these views. Meretz, the Labor Party and the Arab parties (i.e., Balad and Ra'am) share some of these views (in some cases in very moderate versions) but are not fully committed to all of them.”  In other words, while there are other anti-Israel parties active in Israel, only Hadash pursues Israel’s annihilation with Stalinist determination.

Goldreich has the answers. If Israel would only rejects Zionism and agree to morph into an Arab communist state, all will be well.

Among Goldreich’s “actions” against the Zionist state that pays for his salary is his signing on to many petitions against Israel, including one that called for international intervention to enforce the so-called Arab “right of return.” That “right of return” is designed to annihilate Israel by means of a massive influx of Arabs claiming to be Palestinians, and turning Israel into yet another Arab state.

The “right of return” stipulates that any Arab, even two generations removed from the 1948 War of Independence, has the right to “go back” and live on the exact same spot where he claims his deceased relatives lived. Arabs who lived at least two years in Palestine prior to 1948 would count as “Palestinians.” Goldreich sees nothing wrong with this, yet he has never been outspoken about the Jewish refugees from Arab countries.

In his academic profile, he shows off his insistence that real problems can be resolved through math rhetoric. Take this: “A related question is that of the comparable difficulty of solving problems versus verifying the validity of solutions. We believe that some problems are much harder to solve than to verify the validity of a solution for them. However, we don't know this to be a fact either: this is actually the famous P versus NP question. Still, we know of many problems that are hard to solve, provided that the above belief is indeed valid. For each of these problems (called NP-hard), an efficient solving method would imply an efficient solving-method for each problem in NP (i.e., each problem for which verifying the validity of solutions is easy). Thus, all the (hundreds of natural) NP-complete problems (i.e., problems are both NP-hard and in NP) are computationally equivalent, although the formulation of many of them seems totally unrelated.”

What? You don’t understand the above?

Maybe that also explains why he still embraces Stalinism over Zionism

Goldreich signed a petition, the Olga Document, that endorsed the Arab “right of return.” It also stated: “We are united in a critique of Zionism, based as it is on refusal to acknowledge the indigenous people of this country and on denial of their rights, on dispossession of their lands, and on adoption of separation as a fundamental principle and way of life. Adding insult to injury, Israel persists in its refusal to bear any responsibility for its deeds, from the expulsion of the majority of Palestinians from their homeland more than half a century ago, to the present erection of ghetto walls around the remaining Palestinians in the towns and villages of the West Bank. Thus, wherever Jew and Arab stand together or face each other, a boundary is drawn between them, to separate and distinguish between the blessed and the cursed.”

To Goldreich, Jews are not indigenous to Israel, only Arabs are. Even more amazing, Goldreich joined his fellow Stalinists and issued a call to grant terrorist Tali Fahima a Nobel Peace Prize. Fahima, an Israeli citizen, was found guilty of helping her Palestinian Arab boyfriend smuggle weapons to kill Jews in terrorist attacks. Fahima has since criticized even her ex-terrorist boyfriend (for being a sell-out to Israeli intelligence.)

Goldreich certainly knows how to promote “peace” by calling for Nobel Prizes to terrorist enablers.

Not content with expressing his personal views in support of Palestinian irredentists and Israeli traitors, Goldreich the Math and Computer Maven also played historian and wrote a “research” article he presented publicly at Harvard attacking the Jewish state further. He did this at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute where advanced postgraduate research is an important part of the curriculum.

“Advanced research” and a “historical report” about Israel and Zionism from a Computer Science Professor? Hmmmm….

Titled “Palestine and Israel: Facts and Opinions” (with more opinions than facts), the presentation was given so the Harvard elite could understand from this visiting Israeli computer professor the follies of Zionism and the evil deeds of the Jewish state. After all. Goldreich is from the distinguished Weizmann Institute and deserves a listen, no?

As a preface to his “historical report,” presented at Harvard, Goldreich states: “As you know, I am neither a historian or political scientist or anything of the sort…. “I’m merely interested in history and politics (with a special natural focus on the ones in Israel). Nothing I write below is original (except my mistakes). It is all based on things I read (but I don’t remember any reference, because these are not important to me and I tend to remember only what is important to me). On the other hand, I might have misunderstood or distorted the things I read. I will try to clearly distinguish facts from opinions and to indicate my level of confidence about facts…I believe that a discussion of the Zionist ideology is essential to the understanding of the situation…Furthermore, one should bear in mind that Zionism is the State Ideology of Israel (which indeed puts the Arab minority is an odd situation).”

Goldreich spoke a while back at Harvard, carrying his anti-Israel manifest to the Ivy League. The entire opening preface to Goldreich’s opening could be summarized as saying, “I haven’t a clue what I am talking about, but I read a lot of anti-Zionist emails from the communist party in Israel that I take at face value. But I’m confident that Zionism is bad and as an Israeli, trust me when I tell you this, the Arab minority are oppressed by the Jews having their own nation. Zionism is bad.”

He then explains to his American audience that he self-authenticates what he is about to tell them because he is of Jewish descent: “I am defined to be a Jewish citizen of Israel. This means that the State of Israel defines me as belonging to the Jewish nationality, based on the fact I am Jewish according to Jewish Religious Law. Actually, I am an atheist. More importantly for our discussion, I am not a Zionist (i.e. I do not subscribe to the State Ideology of Israel).”

Goldreich insists there that Israel is the product of religious exclusivity. In this and other things, Goldenreich gets much of his presentation wrong. On geography and history, he fails to mention how Jordan was once a part of Israel-in-the-making within the British mandate. Nor does he point out that the Jews legally purchased all their lands in “Palestine.”

But his definitions and history of Zionism are what really miss the mark. He declares, “First issue: a nation with no territorial basis…In case of the Jews, the common culture is actually a common religion, but it is clear that the territorial conditions do not apply.” As usual among Israeli communists, the Jews (the Zionists) are the interlopers who stole a country from another Arab nation (that never existed). This is the message presented by Goldreich to an American audience at Harvard.

He next assaults Zionism because the early Zionists were European, as if that is a reason to deny them legitimacy. The majority of Jews in Israel today are actually from the Middle East, Oriental or “Mizrachi” Jews. Many of the “European Jews,” such as from France, are themselves Sephardic or Oriental, having fled to France earlier as refugees. Goldreich adds, “The main thesis of Zionism is (as an ideology) is almost a-historical.  It is claimed that in all periods and all (other) countries Jews suffer (and will suffer) discrimination and persecution, and the only way to escape this ‘destiny’ is for the Jews to create and live in a Jewish state.”  We are waiting for an explanation of what is wrong with that belief.

The rest of Goldreich’s “report” is here.  Incredibly, this verbal assault on Israel was presented at Harvard, and is now on the Weizmann Institute’s own website, listed under “wisdom.”

Poor Chaim Weizmann!
