Dialogue from the "ACADEMIA" chat list of Israeli Professors concerning the Hebrew University "Lack of Rape Proves Racism" Thesis (Feb 26, 08):

From: "jacob shasha" shasha@FSMAIL.NET:

You may recall how several people on this list dismissed as a "rightwing conspiracy" the media reports about how a MA thesis at the Hebrew University, claiming that when Israeli soldiers do not rape Arab women, this proves how racist they are.  The thesis was awarded a prize by the university and the university President and Rector even publicly defended the thesis - its contents and not just the right of the bimbo student to express her stupid ideas - as well as her thesis supervisors, whose presence on the faculty there is an international disgrace.

Rightwing conspiracy to misrepresent the thesis, huh?  Well, read this:

From: Professor of Sociology at Ben Gurion University: "Ran Chermesh" rancherm@BGU.AC.IL:

Jacob Shasha's claim that "The thesis was awarded a prize by the university and the university President and Rector even publicly defended the thesis - its contents and not just the right of the bimbo student to express her stupid ideas - as well as her thesis supervisors, whose presence on the faculty there is an international disgrace" is an extreme example of a claim, a political claim, which is taken with extreme disregard to scientific method and colleagual ethics.

Jacob, please, first read the data, and only afterwards formulate your view!!!

The MA itself is available on the net in

I read it and was deeply impressed by its scientific value. I'm a sociologist, and I'm not a radical sociologist. I prefer that my critic is formulated following research and not prior to doing my homework.

I'm quite shocked from finding Amnon Rubinstein in the domain of the uninformed. Would you, Amnon, trust a daily newspaper, in a legal case? Would you endorse a criticism of a verdict without reading it, based on a paper report? Would you trust a non-legal expert criticism of a legal research? Why did you trust a non-sociologist's criticism of a sociological piece of research? How could you base your judgment on Ben-Dror Yemini's flipping of an MA research thesis?

From: "jacob shasha" shasha@FSMAIL.NET:

In response to Chermesh's praise for the worst academic disgrace  (the "rape" thesis) in Israel since the Toaff affair:

I DID read it, and clearly you did not.  The "evidence" in the thesis consists entirely of the personal opinions of a handful of reserve soldiers being interviewed, none of whom holds degrees in criminology, and none of whom believes the reason that Israeli soldiers do not rape Arab women because they are racist.  It then has the unsubstantiated and patently absurd opinion to this effect by the MA student, endorsed by her professors, and then by the President and Rector of the university, holding that the only reasonable explanation for the absence of rape is that the Jewish soldiers are too racist to rape Arabs!

Not an extremist yourself, you claim?  "I read it and was deeply impressed by its scientific value. I'm a sociologist, and I'm not a radical sociologist." Your posting belies this assertion!  If this constitutes scientific value, well, maybe there is a problem in the BGU sociology department! From: "Ran Chermesh" rancherm@BGU.AC.IL:

Well, Jacob, if you read it, then it's my turn to apologize. I don't know what's your specialization is, but a few words of explanation on qualitative sociology may be helpful. A work of sociological research written in the qualitative perspective is EXACTLY what the author of " -", Tal Nitzan did. This is a study which is based on an in-depth interview with a small sample. It fulfills the frame of reference of a journal named Qualitative Sociology ("Qualitative Sociology is a major source of current research based on the qualitative interpretation of social life. Each issue offers a broad spectrum of articles dealing with theory, fieldwork and ethnography, historical and comparative analyses, photographic studies, and qualitative analysis of quantitative data). The sample can't be representative, it's too small. Any claim for statistical significance doesn't exist. It's in a way, an indication for the need of a more comprehensive research and a complement to a quantitative research.

Nitzan's research shows many aspects of the encounter (or absence of encounter) between young soldiers and Palestinian women. The point raised by Yemini, which triggered Rubinstein and Shasha is a small part of the study. But, as we know, when a dog bites a person, it's no news. When a person bites a dog, however, it's a "real" piece of news.

So translating his babble into English, just go out and write lies, fraud, ridiculous personal "opinions," and complete nonsense to promote your lunatic political agenda and then call it "Qualitative Sociology."  The only conclusion is that "Qualitative Sociology" is a synonym for nonsense and mindless babble. Hermesh's "evaluation" raises serious questions over whether "Qualitative Sociology" should even be considered a form of analytic thought, and frankly I have my doubts as to whether "Industrial Sociology" should be either.

Eureka!  I have made a scientific breakthrough.  I have Qualitative Sociological evidence that rape is a crime generally commited by women against men!  I want to get the Hebrew University sociology prize!

A 23-year-old Norwegian woman was sentenced to nine months in prison Wednesday after she was convicted of raping a man.

The Bergen district court also ordered the woman, whose name was withheld, to pay 40,000 kroner (US$6,400; euro4,960) in compensation to the man in what the Norwegian news media said was the first case of its kind in Norway.

According to court testimony, the January 2004 sexual assault took place when the 31-year-old man, whose name was also withheld, feel asleep on a couch in the apartment the woman shared with her boyfriend.

In court, he testified that he woke up because ...
